Giving young people a voice
West Berkshire approves Youth Council
West Berkshire Council is delighted to announce the approval of a Youth Council, following a meeting of the Council's Executive on Thursday, 18 December.
The appointment of the Youth Council is a major step forward in empowering young people to influence decisions that affect their lives today and shape the future of our district.
This initiative delivers on a key priority in the Council Strategy, to ensure that young people have a meaningful voice in local governance. It will be run by young people, for young people, creating a dynamic forum where they can discuss issues that matter most, engage directly with decision-makers, and contribute to improve life for young residents across West Berkshire.
"Young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow- they are stakeholders today. Their perspectives are essential, and we want to ensure they will be heard where it matters most. This is more than a symbolic gesture. It is an urgent and practical step to involve young voices in shaping policies on education, mental health, climate action, and community development.
In the new year, we'll be introducing more initiatives for young people to help them connect with the Council. After all, they're our residents - and taxpayers of tomorrow, and we want them to feel a real sense of belonging and association with their Council. The Youth Council will play a big part in making that happen."
The approved model draws on best practice and includes a draft Terms of Reference and Code of Conduct, ensuring the Youth Council operates effectively and inclusively.
West Berkshire Council invites all eligible young people to take part in this exciting opportunity to make a difference. Details on how to join and contribute will be announced in due course.
