About the strategy
West Berkshire Council's new Waste Management Strategy sets out our approach to waste, recycling, and street cleansing services through to 2032.
The strategy directly supports our wider goals to:
- deliver services we're proud of
- tackle the climate and ecological emergency
- engage with residents to build a more sustainable future
These ambitions are set out in the:
Our Waste Management Strategy contributes to these by:
- increasing recycling and reducing waste
- cutting carbon emissions from waste services
- protecting and improving the local environment
Key themes
The strategy is built around three guiding principles:
1. Drive down general waste and increase recycling
- introducing 3-weekly black bin collections
- reviewing recycling containers
- expanding what can be recycled at the kerbside
2. Improve West Berkshire's street scene
- tackling litter and fly-tipping
- enhancing street cleansing services
- strengthening enforcement
3. Lead the way
- managing the Council's own waste more sustainably
- embedding social value and supporting local businesses
What you told us
Our 6-week public consultation received over 5,000 responses from residents, businesses, and local groups, with feedback used to shaping the final version.
You told us:
- 47% of households have space in their black bin on collection day
- 52% felt they could adapt to less frequent black bin collections with the right support
- strong support for collecting more types of recyclables
- interest in better recycling containers

We are now working on the implementation actions within the strategy including:
- transitioning to new black bin collection frequencies
- reviewing recycling containers
- expanding the materials we collect for recycling
