Highway Improvement Programme

Find out about our scheduled road maintenance work across the district.

A sign with a green outline with the words 'Improving Your Roads' above the Volker Highways and West Berkshire Council logos.

Road maintenance is one of the council's key priorities. We recognise that having well maintained roads is important to our residents. Each year we produce an annual programme of road improvements.

All road maintenance work scheduled to be carried out by West Berkshire Council is listed in our Icon for excel Highway Improvement Programme [65KB] . You can view the programme on our interactive map below.

Roadworks that are not listed in our programme are most likely being carried out by another organisation, such as a utility company. You can check all current (and some future) roadworks using the interactive roadworks map. The map includes contact details for the companies carrying out the work.

You can read more about the different treatment types featured in the programme here.

Funding

We have an extensive programme of road resurfacing and treatment this year which is part of the council's drive to improve the condition of our roads. The majority of capital funding comes to us as a direct grant from central government, with the remainder allocated by council borrowing or from capital receipts. For 2025/26 a total budget of £12m will be invested in the network which is £4m more than 2024/25.

How we choose sites

Our asset management team make sure regular condition surveys of our roads are carried out. This is to comply with the requirements set by the Department for Transport.

The data from these surveys is combined with other known information, such as the amount of reactive maintenance that has taken place. The team will then use this information to help identify the areas that need work.

See our Icon for pdf Highway Asset Management Plan [1004KB]  for more information.
