Elective Home Education and Private Tuition (Home Schooling)

Educating your child outside the mainstream school system

You have the right to educate your child outside the school system if you wish to.

However, if you choose to educate your child outside of the school system and they are of compulsory school age, you are obliged under the Education Act 1996 to ensure that your child is in receipt of a full-time education appropriate to their age, aptitude and ability, including any special educational needs that they may have.

There are independent resources you can access to help you understand what elective home education is, how it will impact you and your child and how to make sure you are providing the best elective home education possible. You can also find guidance on home education on the GOV.UK website.
