How do I know if the job role is eligible for a certain level of DBS check?

The DBS publish eligibility guidance to help you determine this. If after reviewing the guidance you are still unsure, please contact dbs.enquiries@capita.co.uk, quote your organisational reference and they will provide you with further support.

How long does it take for a DBS application to complete?

Each application is different and the completion time can vary with some checks taking longer, especially if they are at an enhanced level and are referred to the police for checks against non-conviction data. You can find out more about processing times on the Gov.uk website

You can also track the progress of an application once it has been submitted to the DBS.

How do I get an overseas DBS check?

If you are recruiting people from overseas and wish to check their overseas criminal record, you should embassy or High Commission of the country in question.

What is the Update Service?

The Update Service is run directly by the DBS, which allows multiple organisations to check a DBS certificate and thus very useful for people working in childcare and healthcare sectors. You can only use the Update Service for standard and enhanced checks.

The applicant is required to register to use the Update Service which costs £13 per year (payable by debit or credit card only). There's no charge if you are a volunteer.

You can apply for the Update Service using your application reference number providing the DBS receive your application form within 28 days. If you've already applied, you can register for the Update Service using your DBS certificate number. You must do this within 30 days of the certificate being issued.

What is Route Two?

Route two can be used if it's impossible to process an application through Route one. There is an additional fee of £6 to use Route two via Security Watchdog.

Who receives the DBS certificate?

The DBS certificate will be issued directly to the applicant using the address given on the DBS application form. Employers can ask to see this certificate to ensure they are recruiting suitable people into their organisation.

Can I speed up my DBS application?

You can track the progress of an application online, free of charge.

An application can be escalated once it has been at stage 4 for 60 days or more. We can carry out this process using the eBULKPlus system.

Each application is different and the completion time can vary with some checks taking longer, especially if they are at an enhanced level and we are referred to the police for checks against non-conviction data.

When do DBS certificates expire?

There is no official expiry date for a DBS certificate.

Any information revealed on a DBS certificate will be accurate at the time the certificate was issued.
