Bulky waste collections

Collection of large or bulky items, such as sofas, fridges or mattresses.

Donating bulky items in good condition:

If you are getting rid of items that are in a good and reusable condition, please consider donating them to charity, reselling or offering them on a free site such as Freecycle or Freegle.

Some charities collect household furniture and electrical items for reuse around West Berkshire, including the Community Furniture Project and the British Heart Foundation. Please check their website for their requirements.

Alternatively, you could take a broken or damaged item to a local repair cafe.

If you have bulky items that you cannot take to one of our recycling centres or donate/reuse, you can pay for a bulky waste collection.

We will collect up to 5 large/bulky items. Each item must be left outside your home on the day of the collection.

What we collect

This service is for large or bulky items that you would normally take with you when moving house, such as:

  • sofas
  • tables
  • chairs
  • mattresses
  • beds
  • fridges, freezers and fridge freezers
  • free standing furniture

Each item will be counted separately, so a sofa would count as one item, but a three-piece suite will be counted as three separate items. Please ask us if you're unsure how many items you have.

As part of the bulky waste service, we cannot collect:

Charges

For up to five items, the cost is £63.

All collections must be booked and paid for in advance.

How collection works

Where possible, please leave item(s) out for collection in the front garden by 6am on the scheduled collection day.

We ask that you:

  • avoid breaking up upholstered items such as sofas and chairs
  • do not place out any items that have not been booked in for collection

Your items will be collected by staff contracted by Veolia, our waste contractor. They will be wearing a grey and orange uniform and will arrive in a branded vehicle carrying the relevant ID. For your own health and safety, we ask all residents NOT to assist the collection team.

Using a private waste company

Everyone has a legal responsibility to ensure their waste is properly disposed of by an authorised person. If you pay someone else to come and remove waste from your property, it is your duty of care to ensure the person or company holds a valid waste carriers licence. You can find information about your duty of care here.
