Town Centre Governance

We have three Town Centre Strategies for Newbury, Thatcham, and Hungerford, which are all based on extensive public consultation and stakeholder involvement. The overall objective of the strategies is to ensure the long-term vitality of our town centres for residents and businesses.

The strategies have been developed with local communities, businesses, stakeholders, and town councils. This has been in the form of stakeholder workshops and an online public survey, which received 4,000 responses in Newbury, 1,060 responses in Thatcham, and 784 responses in Hungerford.

We are continuing to work together with each town's stakeholders in the form of town centre steering groups to bring these exciting proposals forward.

In the spirit of local decision-making, all three steering groups are now chaired by a member of their respective town councils. Councillor Andy Moore from Newbury Town Council chairs the Newbury steering group; Councillor Owen Jeffery from Thatcham Town Council chairs the Thatcham steering group; and Councillor James Cole from Hungerford Town Council chairs the Hungerford steering group.

Councillor Louise Sturgess is the portfolio holder for Regeneration, Growth & Strategy Development at West Berkshire Council.
