Supported Lodgings

Step by Step and West Berkshire Council's Supported Lodgings Scheme

Some young people that have been in care, or have been forced to leave home due to family problems, find themselves struggling to cope alone.

Step by Step, who provide Supported Lodgings, have a team of hosts that help to bridge the gap between home or being in care, and living independently in the community. The young people that are placed with hosts benefit from being able to develop their independent living skills whilst living with a responsible adult.

Who can become a Supported Lodgings Host?

Supported Lodgings hosts come from all walks of life and backgrounds. There are no restrictions based on your age or ethnicity, and it doesn't matter whether you are single, married, living as a couple, LGBTQ, have children living at home, don't have children, own your own home or live in rented accommodation.

What services is the Supported Lodgings host required to deliver?

The host, with the help and advice of a Supported Lodgings Support Worker, will support the young person to develop the skills they need to live independently.

The level of support given will be agreed before the young person moves in, but it might include:

  • helping them to plan and cook healthy meals
  • assisting them with budgeting their money appropriately
  • supporting them with college, university or job applications

What are the benefits of becoming a Supported Lodgings host?

  • You will receive monthly financial support for each young person staying with you
  • There is on-going training, guidance, advice and support every step of the way
  • Being a host can be very rewarding and can be carried out alongside a full time job
