Find out more about some of our local voluntary sector organisations
We work with lots of local voluntary sector organisations across West Berkshire. Below, we've featured some of those organisations to showcase what they do and how they help our communities!
Berkshire Music
Berkshire Music Trust is a charity that provides high-quality music education and community programs across Berkshire. It offers lessons in schools and music centres, runs choirs and orchestras for all ages and abilities, and supports inclusive music-making for early years, older adults, and people with additional needs.
Berkshire Youth
Established in 1940, Berkshire Youth provides support to youth leaders and young people across Berkshire and within the six unitary authorities. We have continued to develop new opportunities for both youth leaders and young persons over this period.
Community furniture project
The Community Furniture Project in Newbury is a charity that helps people in need by providing low-cost or free reused furniture, electrical items, and household goods. It also offers training, volunteering, and work experience opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, young people, and those facing social disadvantage.
Home-Start
Home-Start UK is a charity that supports families with young children through challenging times by offering free, confidential, and non-judgemental help from trained volunteers. They provide home visits, group support, and help accessing local services to improve children's outcomes and strengthen family wellbeing.
Swings and Smiles
Swings and Smiles is a charity based in Thatcham that provides play, support, and friendship for children with special needs and their families. Their centre in Thatcham offers inclusive play sessions, respite care, sibling support, and outreach services to schools and community groups.
Facilities include a sensory room, activity spaces, a secure garden, and accessible equipment like hoists and wheelchair swings. Sessions are open seven days a week and must be booked in advance.
Foodbank
West Berkshire Foodbank is a local charity that provides emergency food parcels and support to individuals and families in crisis across the region. Operated in partnership with local churches and part of the Trussell Trust network, it uses a voucher referral system and relies heavily on community donations and volunteers.
