Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs)

The role of an Independent Reviewing Officer

Every child that is looked after by West Berkshire Council is appointed an Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO).

An IRO will chair a child's Children in Care (CIC) review to make sure that their care plan meets their needs and is progressing within agreed timescales. They will make sure that reviews are conducted in line with policies and procedures, the child's views are listened to and their best interests are taken into account.

IROs can also challenge the council when there have been decisions or actions taken that may not be in the best interests of a child, to ensure that the best outcome is achieved.

Annual IRO Report

It is the role of the Manager of the IROs to produce an annual IRO Report for the scrutiny of the corporate parenting board. This report should also be available as a public document from the local authority.
