2023 Review of Parliamentary Constituencies

Background

To rebalance the number of electors represented by each member of parliament (MP), the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) is reviewing the boundaries of the parliamentary constituencies in England (under the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 2020, and the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011). This means that your MP, and where you go to vote, may change. 

It's an important process, which requires considerable change to the existing map of constituencies. The BCE is required by law to make sure that each constituency in England has between 69,724 and 77,062 electors, excluding two 'protected' constituencies for the Isle of Wight. As part of this process, the number of constituencies in England will increase to 543. 

In 2022, the BCE published their first draft of the new map of constituencies. They held two public consultations and, having taken all feedback into consideration, they've made significant changes to their initial proposals. The revised proposals for new constituencies (along with all comments previously sent in) are available to view on their website.

The last stage of engagement was a final four-week consultation which ran from from Tuesday, 8 November to 5 December 2022, which was the last chance to have your say on the proposed boundaries or the new names. They published a Frequently Asked Questions Factsheet [416KB] which might be useful to you.

What happens next

The Government will draft an Order containing the recommendations of all four Parliamentary Boundary Commissions: once that draft Order is approved by the Privy Council, the new constituencies will be used for the next general election following that date (for any by-election that may take place beforehand, existing constituencies are used).
