Background

Following discussions with Speen Parish Council and local representatives, we made a successful bid to the government's Active Travel Fund and have been given funding to construct a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists from Stockcross village towards Newbury, with the initial phase running alongside B4000, between Stockcross village and the A4.

The plans have also been developed with the involvement of Active Travel England, Speen Parish Council and West Berkshire Council District Councillors.

What we are proposing

We plan to construct the scheme on the public Highway, on the north side of the B4000. The scheme involves:

  • reconstruction and widening of short existing sections of footway near to the A4 roundabout
  • construction of a shared path for use by pedestrians and cyclists, parallel to the B4000 on its north side between the A4 roundabout and a point opposite Stockcross Post Office, including provision of marked crossings at the side turning that serves Rookswood, Chapel Lane and Snake Lane, and at other accesses
  • alterations to the existing crossing immediately east of, Stockcross Post Office
  • installation of raised kerbs at bus stops to assist with boarding and alighting from local buses, including at the main stops in Stockcross

The works will be undertaken by our term contractor Volker Highways and are anticipated to start in late summer 2023, extending into the autumn.

The Stockcross Active Travel Path scheme is a first step in creating an off-carriageway route for wheeling and cycling as well as walking, between Stockcross village and the quiet road called Speen Lane that connects onwards into Newbury.

, we will shortly be starting design work on the next section of the route, crossing the A4 and A34 towards Speen Lane, in anticipation of further external funding becoming available in the near future for detailed design and construction of that section.
