Mobile Library and At Home Service

Mobile Library stops and times, and housebound and residential services. West Berkshire Council's 2025-26 Budget Proposals were approved at the Full Council meeting on 27 February, including a proposal to discontinue the Mobile Library service from 1 April 2025. In connection with this, we are expanding our At Home Service and investigating other venues for pop-up libraries, such as the one which has been running successfully for several months in Compton.

Pop-Up Libraries

Compton Pop Up

There will be a Pop-Up Library at Compton Village Hall on Thursday 27 March and on Thursday 10 April, 10am to 12pm.

Everyone is welcome to drop in to find a selection of books to borrow.

If you are not a member of West Berkshire Libraries, you can join when you visit - it's FREE!

If you can't find the books, you are looking for, just tell us about the sort of books you like to read and we'll choose a selection for you for to collect on our next visit.

At Home service

If you can't come to us, we'll come to you.

If you find it difficult to visit your local library and are unable to get to us, possibly because of age, disability, lack of access to transport or caring responsibilities, our At Home service may be able to deliver books to you.

There is no charge for this service, except when you request a book not held in any West Berkshire library.

How does it work?

A member of staff will visit you to discuss your requirements, to find out what sort of books you enjoy and whether you prefer hardbacks or paperbacks, large print books or perhaps audiobooks (spoken word items). If you want to use our e-library service, we can help you with that, too.

A library volunteer will then choose and deliver books to your home at a pre-arranged date and time, usually every three weeks. You can request favourite authors or particular titles and we will be happy to get them for you if we can.

Our library volunteers are friendly and always enjoy a chat. They have all been DBS (Police) checked.
