Companion pets offer creature comforts
We gave away robotic cats to residents this Christmas
The holiday season can be a particularly lonely time for many, especially for those who find themselves away from friends, family, or even their beloved pets. This was the case for Kelly, a resident in a local Residential Home, who dearly missed the companionship of a furry friend. Her face would light up whenever she saw animals, a clear sign of the joy they had brought her.
Recognising this, one of the team members suggested introducing a Companion Cat to Kelly. These lifelike robotic pets mimic the behaviour of real cats, responding with purrs and movements when stroked. They offer the comfort and companionship of a real pet without the demands of daily care. For residents like Kelly, these Companion Cats provide a soothing presence, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness.
This solution is just one of the many options available through the Council's Adult Social Care services. By embracing technology, we are able to significantly enhance the quality of life for our residents, ensuring they feel supported and connected, even in the absence of a living pet.
Councillor Patrick Clark, Portfolio holder for Adult Social Care, said: "Isolation and loneliness is a problem which sadly, is faced by many people across the UK - not just those in Adult Social Care. I am glad to welcome new innovations in the way that we deliver care."
Councillor Vicky Poole, Portfolio Holder for Transformation, said: "Robo-pets was an idea that came from a worker delivering front line services in Adult Social Care. With such a person-focussed approach, the speed at which this went from "idea" to "solution" was an absolute credit to the people involved!"
These Companion Pets are a great source of reducing stress and feelings of isolation and help with residents' health and wellbeing. Our Adult Social Care team have a selection of companion cats available and are currently exploring the options for other types of robotic pets.
