West Berkshire Council is among the country's top-10 districts to provide value for money - according to independent research. analysed a variety of council services including recycling levels, road conditions, crime rate, percentage of good or outstanding schools and care homes. The report found the district scored well on road maintenance compared to other councils and was the highest scorer on social care.

Across key areas West Berkshire Council scored out of ten:

  • Road Maintenance - 9.1
  • Household Waste Recycling - 7.6
  • Education - 9.0
  • Social Care - 9.8

The overall performance score for West Berkshire Council was 8.49 out of 10.

Council tax this year (2022/23) makes up around 74% of West Berkshire Council's revenue and totals £110m.

The Leader of West Berkshire Council, Councillor Lynne Doherty, said in response to the report:

"It was fantastic to read this report and see in black and white what we already know - that we provide excellent value for money for local residents. We work hard to deliver as much as we can on behalf of local residents - spending council tax carefully to provide the best services we can.

"I am particularly proud to read that we were the highest scorer on social care. Supporting our most vulnerable residents - both adults and children - is a priority for us. We put £38 of every £100 we spend into adult social care and £12 into our Children and Family Services. I am delighted that we have received this endorsement of our performance in such an important area."

The recognition of social care performance comes hot on the heels of an Ofsted inspection which found that children's services has retained it's 'Good' status across all areas inspected.
